About Jim Shields Photography

Welcome to Jim Shields Photography. We are Jim & Debbie Shields, a husband and wife team from Sterling Heights, Michigan, that photographs weddings in the Greater Detroit area. While Debbie isn’t shooting the camera, I could not do any of this without her. She is my eyes when I don’t see that lint on the jacket or lipstick smudge on the cheek. Those are the kind of details that are so important in wedding photography today. The new digital cameras pick up all those details very clearly and are a lot of work to remove after the fact. We try to take those problems out of the picture before the shutter is pressed. PLEASE NOTE: JIM HAS NOW RETIRED FROM SHOOTING WEDDINGS, HOWEVER HE IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR SPECIAL EVENT UPON REQUEST.

Debbie doesn’t always get a chance to work with me on every wedding. In those cases I have my son John assist me. John has a very good eye for photography and usually is shooting along side of me. I can’t guarantee John’s availability for all my weddings as he has a day job and has recently added a new addition to his family. John and his wife Lauri had another baby girl this year, our little Elyse Faith is now the little sister to their Norah Grace. Norah Grace is our oldest grandchild and Elyse Faith is our youngest and they keep us pretty busy these days.

My interest in photography started in the early 1980’s when I almost went into the business full time, but decided against it when kids started coming along and the need for medical insurance was more important than doing what I loved. After drifting away from photography for a few years, I was introduced to the world of the new, auto-focus digital SLR camera and pursued it with more passion than before. Finally in 2003, and after finishing my studies at the New York Institute of Photography, with the support of family and friends, I was convinced to follow my dream and that is how Jim Shields Photography was started.

Debbie & I have been wedding coordinators at our church in Fraser, Michigan, for over 10 years. From that perspective, we have observed many photographers and their styles – which range from professional to downright awful. I often remind my wife of one photographer who used his assistant to continually wipe the sweat off his brow with a Kleenex. Debbie isn’t going for it, and I’m not pushing.

We have a relaxed approach that captures the events of the day uninterrupted. I usually start at the bride’s home and go from there to catch those candid shots of preparation with the special people around you. All scheduling is discussed in advance so everyone knows where I will be, and when. We believe that every part of your wedding day should be memorable; the family and formal pictures are short, fun and creative so you spend as little time away from the celebration as possible.

I feel very fortunate to work with the most important woman in my life. We would both be honored to be a part of the most amazing and memorable day of your life.
